Eastern PA Medcom provides expedient Advanced Life Support (ALS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) Communications to the Eastern Pennsylvania Emergency Medical Services Region. All sixteen (16) hospitals are linked to the Communications Center for effective and efficient radio communications.
Eastern PA MedCom went online November 18, 1989. Over time, Eastern PA MedCom has become an integral part of the Public Emergency System. Eastern PA MedCom provides UHF (Ultra High Frequency) radio communications between the EMS Provider and the Medical Command Facility. MedCom recently upgraded our recording capabilities to a state of the art Digital Voice Logging System - Nice-Log - giving MedCom the ability to provide Quality Digital CD Recordings. All radio communications are recorded for QA/QI (Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement) purposes and are available, upon request and permission, to all regional agencies and Hospitals. Eastern PA MedCom monitors all Regional Hospital diversions and notifies all Public Safety Answering Points (PSAP) via this website.
Since 1989, Eastern PA MedCom has been "committed to providing optimal Radio Communications". In July of 1989 Eastern PA MedCom expanded its Radio Communications to include handling (MCI) Mass Casualty Incidents, in the 6 County Region which is represented by Eastern Pennsylvania Emergency Medical Service Council.
- Berks County
- Carbon County
- Lehigh County
- Monroe County
- Northampton County
- Schuylkill County
During an MCI the duties and responsibilities of Eastern PA MedCom are to establish communications with Incident Commander at the incident. Command will advise MedCom what resources are needed from each participating facility; we provide each facility with any additional information related to the incident. Incident Command will also notify MedCom of the exact location of the incident and the number of people affected by this incident. Eastern PA MedCom will link all hospitals within the "Zone" of the incident and provide them with the initial information. MedCom will gather bed availability for the Incident Commander or designee. MedCom will gather all additional information; such as, types of injuries, hazards that are involved and any other pertinent information. If there are injuries on scene that require the need for a "Specialty" Hospital (i.e. pediatric, burn center, trauma center), MedCom will locate the closest facility to the incident and notify the hospital of the incident that has occurred. MedCom will also place the closest Air Medical Service(s) on standby in the event their services are needed. All information that is gathered is relayed back to the Incident Commander that is on location. The involvement of Eastern PA MedCom is crucial and will alleviate the On-scene personnel from having to perform this task.
During a large scale incident, Eastern PA MedCom will also provide a Personnel Accountability Record (PAR) if requested, to personnel on scene. This information is recorded for the Incident Commanders use at the end of the Incident.
Eastern PA MedCom also utilizes Regional Communication, which is an efficient and effective way to communicate with all PSAP within the six (6) county region of which we serve. With the touch of one button, Eastern PA MedCom is able to communicate with all PSAP's with in a several hundred mile area. Regional Communication is a type of intercom which allows us to communicate without the use of radio channels or telephone. With the ability to do this, Eastern PA MedCom is proving we are "Committed to Providing Optimal Radio Communications".
